Piano Quintet in g minor, Op.30

Arthur Hinton (1869-1941) was born in the English village of Beckenham. He studied violin at the Royal Academy of Music, with Prosper Sainton and Emile Sauret, and composition with Francis William Davenport. After graduating, he stayed on at the Academy as a sub-professor, before travelling to Munich for further study with Josef Rheinberger and Karel Navrátil, after which he traveled widely staying for some periods in Vienna and Rome.

Back in London, he pursued a career as a prominent theater conductor and composer. His wife, the concert pianist Dorothy Goodson helped to promote many of his works including this piano quintet which dates from 1910. In three movement, the quintet opens with a big Allegro giusto in which there are many tempo changes and mood swings. The middle movement Allegro molto scherzando is nervous, light and playful with a nicely contrasting trio section in the middle. The finale begins with a lengthy Andante which serves as the quintet’s slow movement. Eventually it is followed by an Allegro moderato and then an Appassionato.

This is a first rate work with many original ideas and is fresh sounding. Had it been composed by a known German or Austrian, it almost certainly would have received far more attention than it did. It is a shame that it disappeared. Long out of print, we are very pleased to make it available once again and hope that it will receive the attention that it deserves.
