Polonaise for Violin & Piano, Op.4 No.1
Emil Mlynarski (1870-1935) was born in the town of Kibarty then part of the Russian Empire, now in Lithuania and known as Kibartai. For centuries, the town had been part of Kingdom of Poland until its break up in 1796. The population of the town was many Polish. He was trained at the St Petersburg Conservatory, studying violin with Leopold Auer and composition with Rimsky-Korsakov and Anatoly Lyadov. After a brief career as a soloist, he concentrated on composition, teaching and conducting, teaching at the Odessa and Warsaw Conservatories and also at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He, serving as founding conductor of the Warsaw Philharmonic and later serving as conductor of the Glasgow Symphony. Most of his compositions were for violin. Dating from 1892, the Polonaise is interesting because it combines traditional Polish dance rhythms but through the prism of late Romanticism. It makes an excellent shorter recital piece or encore.
