Two Tangos for Piano Trio
Cafetin de Buenos Aires and La Calesita
Mariano Mores (1918-2016) originally Mariano Martinez was born in Buenos Aires. He was trained as classical music pianist at a conservatory in that city and pursued a career as a pianist, conductor and composer. He stopped playing classical music and began to play popular music, including the tango genre. He formed a trio with two sisters, Myrna and Margot Mores and adopted their surname as his own by which he became known. He played lead piano and conducted several orchestras and became a well known tango dance composer.
Cafetin de Buenos Aires (the little tavern of Buenos Aires) was a song, the product of a collaboration that was composed for a scene from the film 1948 Corrientes in which Mores was to act. He wrote the melody line and the lyrics and then passed the tune on to fellow composer Enrique Santos Discipolos who produced the finished piece with harmonies. It became tremendously popular and was subsequently arranged not only for orchestra but several smaller combinations including piano trio
La Calesita is a very popular Argentine dance step with eight turns, hence a constant turning or whirling. The word means merry go round in English. Several composers produced tangos with this name, including Mores whose piece, composed in 1953, became one of the most popular and made into several arrangements.
