Divertissement et Musette

Nonet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, 2 Violins, Viola & Cello

Gustave Samazeuilh (1877-1967) was born in the French city of Bordeaux. He studied music with Ernest Chausson until the latter's death in 1899, and then attended the Schola Cantorum de Paris, where he became a pupil of Vincent d'Indy and Paul Dukas. He was also much influenced by the works of Debussy. He did not write a great deal of chamber music. In addition to this work he composed a suite for string trio and a string quartet.

The Divertissement et Musette was completed in 1902 but not published until a decade later. It was dedicated to the Double Quintet of Paris. The opening Divertissement is a direct descendent of the classical divertimento. It is charming and playful, anticipating neo-classicism. The Musette is calm and languid in mood. This is an a very appealing work which highlights Samazeuilh's compositional skill in the way he handles the instruments as well as his melodic ability..

An excellent choice for the concert hall and a work which can be warmly recommended to amateurs as it is not at all difficult to play.
