Schumanniana--Six Pieces for String Trio

For 2 Violins and Cello or Violin, Viola and Cello

Paul Klengel (1854-1935) was born in the German city of Leipzig and studied violin with Engelbert Röntgen and piano and composition with Carl Reinecke at Leipzig Conservatory. A versatile musician, he also received a doctorate, having written a thesis on the aestetic of music and was also a sought after choral conductor who held positions in Stuttgart, New York and Leipzig. He pursued a career as a concert violinist and eventually became a professor of violin and piano at the Leipzig Conservatory. He was widely considered to be one of the finest arrangers of his time and was the "House Arranger" for Simrock, one of the world's leading music publishers. His arrangements were frequently used in concerts and some are still used for teaching purposes today.

His Schumanniana dates from 1919 and originally consisted of 24 short works for 2 violins and cello taken from various piano works by Robert Schumann. We have chosen six of the best to present here and have also created a viola part as a replacement for the second violin so that the work can be played by the standard string trio. We have provided soundbites for five of the six works. We were unable to find a soundbite for the sixth, Wiegenliedchen or Little Lullaby,

There is no question but that Paul Klengel's arrangement of these works brings a textural subtlety that not only enhances these works but also creates a depth of feeling missing from the piano version alone. Today, Klengel's fine arrangement of this work has all but disappeared. By making it available once again, we hope to remedy this situation. An excellent choice for concert as well as for amateur players.
