Four Songs for Violin & Piano, Op.16

Emil Sjögren (1853-1918) along with the better known Hugo Wolf was widely regarded as the finest art song writer since Franz Schubert. He wrote several song cycles which were performed throughout Europe during the last decades of the 19th century and the first of the 20th when the genre of the art song was much in vogue and heard in recitals. As with Schubert and Hugo Wolf, Sjögren had an extraordinary gift for melody.

The Four Songs were originally from the song cycle An Eine composed in 1886. The Swedish violinist and friend of Sjögren Tor Aulin made transcriptions, with Sjögren's approval, of four of the songs which were published together to make a mini-collection. The songs were known as "Beautiful girl, I've searched so long for you, Look upon Me with your dark eyes, Warm my cheek with yours, and Lullaby.

Unavailable for many years, we are pleased to make it available once again. It is clear that Aulin, and most likely Sjögren, had in mind that the songs would be performed together in recital, perhaps taking the place of a full length sonata. However, any one of these lovely works would make a fine encore. After hearing the two other collections of Aulin's transcriptions of Sjögren's songs which we offer, you may also wish to consider owning the entire set. Rather than buying each separately, we are offering an Album of all 10 songs from the three separate collections at a very attractive price.
