Album Collection of Ten Songs for Violin & Piano
From Opp.12, 16 and 22
Emil Sjögren (1853-1918) along with Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf is acknowledged as one of the finest art song writers. It is for his many song cycles that he was known and remembered. They were often performed throughout Europe during the last decades of the 19th century and the first of the 20th when the genre of the art song was much in vogue and heard in recitals.
The famous Swedish violinist and friend of Sjögren Tor Aulin made transcriptions, with Sjögren's approval, of fifteen of Sjögren's songs, which were published and sold separately and grouped together in mini-collections. These collections have been out of print for more than a century. We have been fortunate in locating three of the collections consisting of a total of 10 songs. While we have offered each of these collections separately, we know that many of you may wish to own and play all of these lovely works. So we have created an Album Collection of all ten songs. No collection of these transcriptions of this size has ever been available. While Aulin, and most likely Sjögren, expected that at least 2 or 3 would be played at one time, and perhaps used in place of a sonata in recital, any one of these pieces will make a superb encore.
